University of Wales CHP Case Study
Combined heat and power projects for inspiring new buildings are always a welcome challenge for the Helec team so we were delighted to recently have been appointed by Whitehead Building Services to provide a CHP solution within the new faculty building on The University of Wales Trinity Saint David Campus, which is located on the beautiful SA1 waterfront in Swansea. This new build development required a combined heat and power unit for its new plant room – Whitehead Building Services called us in to help.
The CHP unit install was part of a series of works carried out for the University on the Trinity Saint David’s Campus. The Campus is brand new and has been purpose-built by the University, close to the beach, to give a new teaching and studying facility. The space is intended to encourage closer collaboration between the faculty and its students and local businesses, making it an important new addition to the existing city centre campus which was founded way back in 1853.
Helec installed an Indop 9kWe CHP unit. This CHP combined heat and power system also produces a constant 19kW thermal contribution to the site services for space heating and domestic hot water production. Its purpose is to work as the “lead boiler” in the plant room. This particular CHP was selected for the role for numerous reasons, chief of which are its compact size, quiet running sound level and industry-leading low NOx exhaust
emissions.
Jonathan explains, “This new complex was opened in September 2018 and is one of the latest multi-based campus sites to have been constructed on the SA1 Swansea waterfront redevelopment. It’s a fantastic multi-million-pound development which really supports the University’s aim to inspire individuals, graduates and practitioners with integrated innovation and enterprise experience. We were delighted to work with the Principle M&E contractor, Whitehead Building Services from Newport on this project in South Wales, alongside the building’s main developer, Kier Construction.

The high-efficiency Indop 9TO CHP unit generates 9kW/e on-site electricity for use within the faculty building and complements the photovoltaic (PV) panels sited on the roof area. As the building is put into use, this combined heat and power unit will give the University of Wales additional benefits. Importantly, it will assist the facilities management team in their ongoing mission to reduce the building’s energy costs and drive down CO2 emissions. Given the beautiful SA1 beachfront location, this contribution to a greener environment going forward is especially appealing and appropriate.
