CHP and Biomass
Mariners Quay is a development of 101 affordable housing units located in one of the most deprived areas of Wales. Helec were appointed by Hoare Lea the MEP Consulting Engineers to provide CHP, Biomass and thermal stores. The sustainability division of Hoare Lea acting as the code assessors for the project achieved code level 5 – one of the largest developments in Wales to attain this.
Hoare Lea were looking for a cost effective integrated approach regarding the supply of CHP, Biomass and thermal stores, which formed part of their strategy to achieve code level 5 and provide affordable warmth for the occupants.
Helec provided a 30kWe natural gas CHP, a Passat C6 70kw Biomass boiler fuelled by wood chip, and an 8000ltr thermal store. The CHP operates continually with back up gas boilers if required. During the winter periods extra heating and hot water is supplied via the seasonal biomass boiler.
Helec met project dates for delivery and provided expert support during the crucial commissioning and early stages of implementation. The project has won many awards including Constructing Excellence in Wales Award 2010 in the Low/Zero Carbon category.
